Today is the 70th Anniversary of the zenith of the UPA's massive genocide against ethnic Poles in Volhynia, when some 100 villages were attacked in a single day.
Wolyn, Galicja, Podole, Pokucie, Lubelszczyzna, Malopolska Wschodnia, Polesie - all regions where the Ukrainian nationalists slaughtered ethnic Poles in 1939 and during the 1940's.
The perpetrators were mostly from the Banderite (OUN-B) formations like the UPA and the seriously misnamed "Ukrainian National Selfdefence" (since 1944 part of the UPA), but to a lesser degree included armed members of the OUN, and also members of other formations like the SS, Ukrainian Police, Ortschutz, SD, and the UPA-UNRA (despite the latter making denials about it after WWII) and probably others, in addition to some "unaffiliated" mobs too.

Who has been slaughtering whom over the centuries?
Stop that silly myth!
It might have started in Volhynia, where a tax revolt by a local Slavic tribe was brutally suppressed by the Varangians - their descendents would show a rather ugly side again, centuries later. Of course, more Varangians-Ukrainians settled the region over the subsequent centuries to a significant degree trying to escape the ravages of the various steppe nomads like the Piechengs, Cumans, Mongols, Tatars. They would also advance their settlement into parts of south-eastern Poland, and centuries later they would claim it as part of their "greater Ukraine" which the Ukrainian nationalists aim to create.
On the Polish border the unprovoked aggression started in 981 AD when the proto-Ukrainian Varangian hordes show up as an auxiliary part of the invading army of the Duchy of the Rus and I guess they slaughtered ethnic Poles. That is when a chunk of south-eastern Poland-proper is stolen, to be liberated in 1018, but stolen again in 1031, liberated in 1069, and then again lost during the 1080's.

Poles finally permanently liberate it during the mid-1300's, after repulsing yet another attempt by the Duchy of Galicia-Volhynia to grab some more of south-eastern Poland.
In 1205 the army of the proto-Ukrainian Duchy of Galicia-Volhynia invades south-eastern Poland, aiming to conquer it but they are wiped out by the Poles at the Battle of Zawichost.

During the 17th century the Ukrainian rebels mass murdered at least around 200 000 Jews and Poles.
A contemporary Jewish source (Eyewitness Chronicle or Yeven Mezulah by Nathan ben Moses Hannover) describes the Ukrainian rebellion that started in 1648:
"Wherever they found the szlachta, royal officials or Jews, they [=Ukrainian rebels] killed them all, sparing neither women nor children. They pillaged the estates of the Jews and nobles, burned churches and killed their priests, leaving nothing whole. It was a rare individual in those days who had not soaked his hands in blood..."
During the 18th century the Ukrainian rebels mass murdered around 100 000 - 200 000 ethnic Poles and Jews.
pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koliszczyzna
At least around 100 000, and according to some estimates even 200 000, ethnic Poles mass murdered during WWII, plus many more Jews (together with those jointly slaughtered with Germans, hundreds of thousands) by the Ukrainian nationalists. Members of other nationalities like the Belarussians, Russians, Czechs, and others were slaughtered by the Ukrainian nationalists too.
To put these numbers in a comparative perspective:
"According to the U.S. Bureau of the Census (1894), "The Indian wars under the government of the United States have been more than 40 in number. They have cost the lives of about 19,000 white men, women and children, including those killed in individual combats,..."
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Indian_Wars
That was only 19 000 spread over centuries of stealing, plundering, murdering, and raping roughly half of the North American continent.
Simply compare it to the hundreds of thousands of ethnic Poles who gave their lives to protect Poland's south-eastern frontier from some very savage and aggressive neighbors.
Slavs? What Slavs?
The Ukrainians of today essentially evolved from the Slavicized Germanic Varangians; that is often visible from their physical appearance, more frequent use of Swedish names (more so than other Slavic-speaking nationalities) and general modes of behavior.
They simply later adopted a foreign Slavic name for themselves, like the Estonians also did adopt a foreign name as their own self-designation from the Germans.
These are historical facts, not some myths.
Even the Ukrainian Zaporozhian Cossacks displayed such traits; they excelled at marine raiding, like the vikings/varangians did, were pretty good infantrymen, but they were very poor cavalrymen.
In fact the Zaporozhian Cossacks were the only Cossacks never known for their cavalry or horsemanship skills.
A certain 17th century Italian described them as "excellent marines, good infantrymen, but very poor cavalrymen."
A French mercenary officer who served in the Polish Army in the Ukraine, also during the 17th century, explicitly mentioned that they were such lousy horsemen that in a pure cavalry battle Poles could defeat them even if outnumbered by a ratio of 10:1.
What we see here is a Germanic "viking" trait. It is noteworthy that even the Anglo-Saxon invaders of Britain had a difficult time fighting against the Brito-Roman cavalry since they hardly possessed any cavalry themselves. Even the later vikings in Western Europe hardly ever fought as cavalry, but rather as infantry or marines.
Of course there are other "viking" traits, like aggressive blood-thirsty behavior on their part, already described.
How come ethnic Belarussians, who also lived under Polish rule during the 1920's and 1930's never displayed such genocidal behavior towards ethnic Poles?
I also somehow never heard of Poles and Slovaks slaughtering each other.
And should we believe in the "Normanist foundation" theory?
No since Rurik was clearly invited, the Original Rus were an Iranian tribe - hence their White, Red, Black tribal subdivisions - and that name was later adopted to designate a multi-tribal and multi-racial political entity, albeit one with a mostly East Slavic element (similar with the Burgundy in Western Europe, which was named for a long lost tribe and expanded to include many parts of Europe where that tribe never even lived). Most of these Iranian Original Rus tribesmen later became part of the Belarussians and the Rusins. The term "Rus" expanded very broadly in the geographical sense, like the medieval Burgundy did.
Keep in mind that among the Eastern Slavs the Norsemen were always known as the Varangians, and never as the Rus.
Also, a single claim in a medieval Rus chronicle about the Rus coming from Scandinavia can be dismissed as dynastic propaganda on the part of the Rurikids, who, due to their foreign origin, wanted to claim that "they are the Rus" and that they gave "their" country its name. But in reality it is well known that they were invited and eventually assimilated foreigners.
Varangians were much more interested in raiding and pillaging, as some Ukrainian historians even admit, and their lack of state-making ability is clearly displayed by their later Ukrainian descendents.
All that they really had was a chieftain Askold who for a time ruled in Kiev and the surrounding environs, probably under Hungarian control (he himself was buried in what is literally referred to as the "Hungarian Hill"), and who was overthrown by the Rurikids and their mostly Eastern Slavic army. It is clear that the Duchy of the Rus was not really "Kievian" as that city and the surrounding area was conquered by force. That the capital of the duchy was later moved there does in no way negate that essentially East Slavic conquest of these proto-Ukrainian Varangians.
So you see that the Varangians-Ukrainians had nothing really to do with either founding of Russia, or with naming it.
Historical facts considering their "state-creation":
The early proto-Ukrainian duchies were quickly subjected by the Mongols-Tatars, under whose control they remained for a very long time.
After that they came under Belarussian-Lithuanian and Polish rule, and that lasted for centuries.
The short-lived Cossack state arose in 1648 only to place itself under Russian rule already by 1654.
The Zaporozhian Cossacks are frequently made into heroic anti-Tatar and anti-Turkish warriors, but not many people know that for a time during the second half of the 17th century they were tributary vassals of the Ottoman Empire.
"In this political situation, the Ukrainian Hetman Petro Doroshenko, in 1669, became a vassal of the Ottomans, using the tactic of balancing policy between the Commonwealth and Muscovy. The position of Hetman Petro Doroshenko supported the Ottomans in the Black Sea, the province of Podillia, and Moldavia, and Wallachia region; moreover the Ottomans started a new war against the Commonwealth from 1672 to 1676 using Ukrainian Cossack’s armies too. 26" - See more at: www.lobstick.com/current-contributions/2011-2012/10-yanischak/#sthash.oqhID1oR.dpuf
They also aligned themselves with the Tatars during their 1648 rebellion.
Last but not least, Slavs originally known as the Neuri, did not originate in Ukraine, but in what is now Belarus and eastern Poland.
Ukraine has been originally a frontier territory between the nomads of the steppe and the forest-dwelling Slavs. In this transitory zone did the Varangians settle in. It is most certainly not an original Slav homeland. In ancient times it was populated by Cimmerians, Thracians, Scythians, Sarmatians.
How do I know all that? Well, a very long time ago there was a certain Serb Israelite from the tribe of Naphtali who convinced some Iranian Ossets to go with him and conquer the Germanic world.
Lets agree that Odin knows his slaves.
We should always keep in mind, that there is a certain racial-genetic background to these repeated genocides.
